This is why I love tennis. Why I choose to stay up until the early hours of the morning watching this marvellous sport.
I’ve said it before, but today I say it with others, the future of Australian tennis looks bright. Australia’s Nick Kyrgios, 19, took on world number one Rafael Nadal and beat the champion, three sets to one.
Making his Wimbledon debut this year, the young Australian took on Nadal and dominated. The game was thrilling, with certain moments cautioning me to the edge of my seat. I was so proud to see fellow fans in the crowd, cheering Kyrgios on to his 7-6 (7/5),5-7, 7-6 (7/5), 6-3 victory.
With many Aussies sending their support via social media, Kyrgios remains to be the only Australian in the Gentlemen’s singles at Wimbledon and from my view, a force to be reckoned with. He has the potential to go far and the incredible drive to succeed. Highlights for me were the aces he continually produced, as well as the first between-the-legs shot.
I remember over the years staying up, and watching Aussie stars take to the court, displaying a standard that has come to be recognised and revered by many around the world. With those amazing moments cherished in my memory, this is one match I can add to the list. It was truly unbelievable to watch and I’m so glad I experienced it.
Kyrgios will go on to face Milos Raonic in the quarter finals tomorrow.
